The family of Moyga Jackson was thrown into mourning yesterday when the Collin’s Lane, Michael’s Village man smashed his car into a tree on Sir Sydney Walling Highway.
He died on the scene.
According to a police report, the 45-year-old was driving on the highway, when at approximately 5 a.m., he crashed into a Pine Tree outside Panache Steel Orchestra panyard, uprooting the tree.
Jackson’s sibling, identified as Mike, told OBSERVER media that his brother worked on a government’s construction site in the area and was most likely heading to work when he died.
“He didn’t have any kids, he has at least 18 brothers and sisters,” Mike said briefly, asking that the family be given some time to deal with the unexpected tragedy.
Jackson was originally from Gambles Terrace where he resided for many years.
But, he last resided in Michael’s Village.
The sibling said that the deceased man’s mother, who resides in the United States, is devastated by the news of her son’s death and she is currently making preparations to come to Antigua.
One woman who claimed to have been driving behind Jackson said that after proceeding through the traffic light on the intersection of Sir Sydney and Sir George Walter Highways, Jackson, the driver and lone occupant of the car, lost control of his dark purple Toyota Mark II, registration plate A51410.
According to the woman, the car veered off the road, ploughed down the tree and landed in the ditch.
When OBSERVER media was called to the scene, the fire department was on site and using the ‘jaws of life’ to free Jackson’s body from the mangled vehicle.
Most of the damage to the vehicle was on the driver’s side which was crushed. The roof of the car was extensively damaged, and the rear wheels fell away when the wrecker hoisted it out of the ditch.
Weeping family members and curious onlookers gathered at the scene, and the early morning commute started to a crawl as police carried out their investigation.
The STRATCOM report on the incident lists the name and address of the deceased as Alson Jackson of Gambles Terrace.
This conflicts with information provided by the family.
