After serving more than 42 years in the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda and other regional and international police organisations, retired Inspector of Police Claudette Brathwaite-Mason received the Queen’s Police Medal at a ceremony at Government House yesterday.

Supported by family and friends and referencing her own personal development, Brathwaite-Mason used the opportunity to encourage young women to join the police force.

“My life as a police officer would not have been possible without the blessings and good care by my mother, therefore my development as a woman, mother and professional is closely linked to virtues taught by my mother.

“I was always challenged to ensure that I educate those around me about the importance of protecting our homes and ourselves; it is necessary for the police and the rest of the society to work closer together in an effort to deal with challenges of crime,” she said.

Brathwaite-Mason served as a member of the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) and continues to serve as an active member of both the Cassada Gardens community and the Police Service Commission.

Former Commissioner of Police Elton Martin spoke glowingly of the hard work and dedication that Brathwaite-Mason portrayed.

“During her training, she mixed perfectly well with all students—always willing to help and do extra whenever she was called upon; she was a pleasant, hard worker and a guiding light to all the other students,” Martin stated.

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Kelvin John, also spoke of the dedication that the recipient had towards the public service.

“At the Police Service Commission, we are of the view that you personify all that is good about policing in Antigua and Barbuda and … we are proud of your outstanding achievement,” John explained.
