The Ministry of Education commissioned a team which worked overnight on Wednesday to address issues plaguing Pares Secondary School (PSS), where teachers entered their third day of a sit-in yesterday, Thursday .
In light of the Ministry’s commitment to restoring regular classes at the 53-year-old institution, Principal Letitia Lawrence told Observer that student attendance remained steady despite the ongoing industrial action.
According to Lawrence, work continued to rectify the main issues, which include an incomplete perimeter fence and a bat infestation. Sources confirm that 90 percent of the largest mound of accumulated dirt and debris at the back of the compound had been removed, along with all surrounding forestry. However, two mounds at the back and one at the front of the institution remained.
Security improvements are underway, with the main entrance gate installed with additional gates yet to be mounted. Ground maintenance and bat control measures are also being implemented.
“The children understand the importance of why certain actions take place,” Lawrence said, noting that this understanding has helped maintain a calm atmosphere at the school.
Education officials expect that all the improvements will be completed within two weeks.
