Persons interested in learning the sport of fencing are being invited to take part in a beginners’ class being hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Fencing Federation (ABFF).

One week of classes have already taken place and the Federation is still encouraging others to get on board.

Vice President of the ABFF Rameez Mascall explained that although the “classes are geared more towards adults, anyone else can still sign up.”

“Over the years, between 2016 and now, just about all of our programs have been geared towards the schools. Whether in primary school or secondary, adults always come around, even parents and sometimes friends, and they want to know when are we going to have a program for them, and so we have listened and we decided this year definitely that we are going to have this program that is geared towards adults, and so, anybody who is interested can come.

“It is not restricted to just adults but it is geared towards them. If you are interested, you can come out and learn about fencing. If you want to be a fencer, a coach, a referee, anything you want to learn about fencing, you can come to this class and learn,” Mascall said.

Classes are from Mondays and Wednesday from 7pm-8:30pm at the Sir Novelle Richards Academy.

Registration is $150 for the six-week training with proceeds going towards program development, Mascall explained.

“Definitely, we want to have more gear available. Especially, in regards to the children. Most times we have more children who are interested than what gear we have available, and another area we really want to develop is our human capacity.

“We want to train more coaches. We want to train at least two referees. We also want to expand our membership. We presently have two functioning clubs and we want to see that continue to grow where we have more private clubs that are functioning under the Federation,” he added.

The classes will culminate with a competition between participants.
