Businesswoman, Brenda “B” Garrett passed away during a trip to the emergency room yesterday; a situation her grieving son said, did not need to happen.
Garrett, who would have celebrated her 50th birthday on July 26, complained to her first born, Reon of feeling unwell and pains to the chest. He recounted that it was about 2 am when he rushed his mother to Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC), from their Independence Drive home.
The young man recalled telling the attending nurse his mother was having difficulty breathing.
“I told her to take her inside to give her oxygen, but she didn’t want to listen, she kept saying [Brenda] had to go through the process and trying to take her blood pressure first. Is only after she grabbed for her chest they took [the deceased] inside. Miss, she didn’t have to die,” the young man said through tears.
When OBSERVER media visited the family of the deceased, her elder son was extremely emotional as he received many supporters and friends of his mother, who stopped by the home to offer condolences.
He sought to dispel claims on social media that his mother’s death was stress related due to his younger brother, Leon being convicted and fined over $6,800 in the St John’s Magistrates Court on Friday for vehicle break-ins, malicious damage and larceny.
“It’s not true. Mommy not supposed to eat fried foods and I believe she may have something to eat and it was late. We were outside under the tree and she keep saying she didn’t feel well and I should call a taxi. When we got to [MSJMC] she was on the chair, I kept telling the nurse to give her oxygen but it was like she wasn’t taking mom serious…then it was too late,” the young man said.
His mother, originally from Guyana, migrated from Region Four – Demerara-Mahaica – 26 years ago with her two young sons. At that time, Reon’s younger brother, Leon Garrett, was only three-months-old.
At the time of her death, Brenda was operating a bar on Independence Drive where she also resided.
Reon believes his mother may have suffered a heart attack.
