Premier Division football returns to the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) this week despite what President of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA), Everton “Batow” Gonsalves, is calling “minor” concerns.
According to the former striker, grounds staff will be working to prepare the surface for action starting Friday.
“One of the trucks went into the goal mouth when the rain was coming and created a little issue but we await the groundsmen to come and address it in preparation for tomorrow and Saturday and Sunday. Everybody should come out going down to the Christmas season and for them to indicate that minister or no minister, government or no government, we don’t want no further disruption of the ABFA’s Premier Division unless it is an act of God,” he said.
The Premier Division was stalled last weekend as the ARG hosted a concert on Sunday night. Efforts to have the show moved to another venue as the ABFA sought to avoid a disruption to its programme which started later than usual this year, proved futile.
Gonsalves has however expressed confidence in his staff to get the job done.
“The cleaning is moving, not as fast as we would like, but they are almost done. There is a little area there [of concern] from a truck intrusion so we are just waiting on the ground staff now as soon as they are totally [able] to remedy that so we will have football going into this weekend,” the president said.
A number of First Division matches have been scheduled for the ARG on Friday including Freemans Village Scorpions vs. Ottos Rangers and Potters Tigers vs. FC Aston Villa.
On Saturday, Grenades face Tryum FC in the Premier Division at 5:00 p.m. while Old Road tackle Pigotts Bullets at 7:00 p.m.
The top flight continues on Sunday when Five Islands face Swetes in the opening match of a triple-header at 3:00 p.m., Greenbay Hoppers take on Sap at 5:00 p.m. and Empire face defending champions Parham in the feature contest.
