The first ever employee of St John’s port has been officially recognised during a special ceremony yesterday.
Winston Gomes was invested with the insignia Grand Officer, The Most Illustrious Order of Merit (GOM) for his outstanding contribution to the development of the port and shipping sectors of Antigua and Barbuda.
Regarded as a founding member of the port, Gomes was employed with the government’s Harbour Division and later with the Antigua Port Authority for over 30 years in various operational and managerial capacities.
Under his tenure the port was transformed into a viable economic organisation by instituting regional best practices, training employees and improving overall standards.
Gomes not only made his mark with those he came in contact with within the port and shipping industry but also with his children who had the opportunity to watch and learn from him as he navigated his countless challenges and achievements.
They spoke of the pride he feels from being associated with the Deep Water Harbour and from being there from day one. And they shared memories of going down to the port with their father and witnessing firsthand his commitment, dedication and loyalty.
Notwithstanding his retirement, Gomes continues to serve with distinction offering sound technical advice based on his institutional port and shipping knowledge as a member of the Board of the Commissioners of the Port Authority. He chairs the Technical Committee and is integral in the port’s transition process from a break bulk cargo port to a modern container organisation.
When asked how he felt about his prestigious award Gomes said, “The almighty has truly blessed me and as such I accept this national award with a great sense of pride and thankfulness, happiness and worthwhileness to be recognised by my country for my lifelong contribution to nation building.”
