As police continue investigating the suspected suicide of a young woman on Thursday evening, friends of the deceased have reported noticing since December that she was troubled.

A source close to the matter told OBSERVER media that the deceased, Nicoma McFarlane of Freeman’s Village, had openly expressed statements on Facebook which had caused her family and friends to become concerned about her well-being.

However, people close to the 25-year-old Jamaican national reportedly reached out to her and were of the view that all was well from thereon.

McFarlane, who arrived in Antigua in October 2018, was found dead in her mother’s home shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the police, her mother made the discovery upon returning home from work.

She immediately summoned the Emergency Medical Services who rushed the young woman to the Mount St John’s Medical Centre, but she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Investigators found evidence suggesting she had ingested a hazardous substance and there were injuries to one of her wrists.

This is the first such incident reported in Antigua and Barbuda so far this year.
