The base of Mount Obama, better known as Boggy Peak, surrounded by farmland and trees as far as the eye could see, was the scene of Antigua and Barbuda’s first homicide for 2025.
The incident occurred at around 10am, where the body of a 35-year-old resident of Old Road was discovered in the area.
Medical personnel remained on scene until approximately 1:45pm, while police investigators — who faced accessibility challenges due to the rugged terrain of the remote location and prevalence of the dense shrubbery in the area — spent hours processing the scene.
The victim was reportedly involved in an altercation with another man before he was shot. Law enforcement has confirmed that a male suspect is currently in custody.
Family members, including the mother, uncle, nieces and nephews of the deceased gathered at the scene, having made their way there after visiting the police station as the somber atmosphere seemed heightened by the isolated setting.
Police have indicated that further details will be released as the investigation progresses, although the remote scene and accessibility issues have presented several challenges to the investigative process.
The country now waits for answers as authorities work to piece together the events that led to what is now a tragic start to the new year.
