Law enforcement officials destroyed more than $13 million worth of illicit drugs at Burma Quarry yesterday, signalling an increase in drug trafficking attempts through the nation’s borders.

“When you look at the figures presented here today, we have seen a slight increase in the number of drugs being imported into the country,” said Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Frankie Thomas. “Our last destruction was in June 2023, where we destroyed over $12 million worth of drugs. Here, we are talking about $13 million, almost $14 million worth of drugs.”

The destroyed contraband included 843.22 kilograms of cannabis valued at $11.15 million, 20.6 kilograms of cocaine worth $721,000, and various quantities of hashish and cannabis plants. The drugs were seized through joint operations between police, customs, and border control at key entry points including the airport, deepwater harbor, and the post office.

Inspector Thomas underscored the connection between drug trafficking and violent crime. “Where there’s drugs, you’re going to see firearms. Where there’s narcotics or illegal drugs, you’re going to have some sort of gang issues that bring that level of concern to law enforcement.”

The inspector also spoke of emerging trends in drug smuggling, particularly the rise of edibles and synthetic substances. “We have seen these types of sweet-looking or attractive substances which contain certain controlled substances. We would have destroyed ecstasy as part of our destruction last year.”

Thomas lauded the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public in combating drug trafficking. “We need all hands on deck. This is a cohesive, collaborative effort where everyone comes on board to understand that we have a product to protect, which is our tourism product.”

The substances which were burned came from cases filed in the Magistrates’ Court and the High Court, representing successful prosecutions and seizures by law enforcement.

Thomas assured those present of the police force’s commitment to preventing drug trafficking. “We are relentless in our efforts. We will continue to do what we have to do to ensure that Antigua and Barbuda remain a drug-free nation.”
