Antigua & Barbuda Pitbulls sent a compelling message on Wednesday night when they dominated Nevis for a 59 points victory in their opening contest of the Leeward Islands Basketball Association (LIBA) Under-20 Championships here at the JSC basketball complex.
Contesting the final game of a triple-header, the home team was led by Lincoln Weekes and Javon Simon who had 17and 12 points respectively while Ezekiel Francois had 11 rebounds.
Coach of the team, Mahijah Davis, said the 92-33 blowout is an indication of the disparity between the two teams.
“We used this as a measuring stick and we were telling the guys [players] that once we can run circles around Nevis that we stand a good chance in the tournament so that was just a measuring stick for us looking forward to bigger and better things,” he said.
Nevis was led by A Liburd with 7 points while Z Smith grabbed nine rebounds.
Davis said the aim is to keep the players focused on the task at hand.
“My assistant coach ‘Supa’ [Cedric David] did a very good job in terms of keeping the guys [players] focused and letting them know that they haven’t really accomplished anything [with the victory]. It’s a regular thing for Antigua to do these kind of things against certain teams so he let them know that they have to stay focused. This is just a nice warm up for us to see where our programme really is,” the coach said.
In Wednesday’s opening contest, Anguilla edged St Maarten 79-73 while St Kitts defeated Montserrat 80-62 in the second game.
Action in the LIBA tournament continues nightly at the JSC basketball complex.
