Former champions, F and G Trading Cuties Ovals Ojays suffered their second loss of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) Division one league on Sunday as they fell to LJ Northside Stingerz, 67-63.
The Ojays dominated the first half and left little to no doubt that they would wrap another win in grand style but Stingerz rallied in the second and pulled off one of the biggest comebacks this season.
Stingerz truly came alive on the defensive end playing a more physical style as they were led by Keroi “Dragon” Lee, Leroy Percival and Coy Quinland who in their own rights were beasts on the boards.
Ovals quickly crumbled under the pressure in the fourth where they shot a disappointing five points despite boasting a roster of a number of veteran players.
It was however a dunk by high-flyer, Quinland over Oval’s Kareem “Macky” Edwards that truly blew the roof off JSC and signalled the demise of the former champs.
Quinland would end the encounter with 15 points and eight rebounds while Lee was the leading scorer for the victors with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
New addition, H. Holsborough contributed with 10 points.
“The game is never finished until the final whistle blows” were the words spoken by Assistant Coach of Stingerz, Michael Freeland who spoke briefly on the Good Morning Jojo show yesterday.
Freeland went on to commend his team members on their performance and the way they readjusted in the second half by being more aggressive on the defensive end, which added to the fall of the Ojays whom, he said, “were mentally out of the game.”
Oval’s Marlon “Buju” Charles had 12 points and seven rebounds with assistance from Mario “Axel” Davis who had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
CBA player, Jermaine Bolden contributed with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a losing effort.
Former champions, Flyers Basketball jumped to the top of the standings on Sunday night as they defeated defending champions, Baldwin Braves, 80-69.
The orange men who now extend their winning streak to nine straight were led by CBA player, Torey Fassett who had 20 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Steven Matthew assisted with 14 points while teammate Kwame Brathwaite chipped in with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five block shots.
National player, Kenya Achom, also of Flyer, contributed with 10 points with new addition, Yohanis Soria sinking 10 and grabbing nine rebounds.
Despite adding two new additions, the champions still could not get over the hump.
Captain Lennox “Termite” McCoy had a game high 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
He was assisted by new addition, Dallas Garry who had 20 points and five assists.
Clinton “Scare-dem” Joshua chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
