PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Dec 4, CMC – The main opposition United National Congress (UNC) Monday called for the removal of Dr. Lester Henry, who is reported to have failed a breathalyser test in September.
The Trinidad Express newspaper reported that Henry has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and will be sentenced on January 11 next year.
In a statement, the UNC said that it was calling for the removal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) lecturer from the Senate following the drunk driving charge.
The party said that this is the second set of legal problems that Henry has faced in 2017 “and as a lawmaker, Henry should at the very least be expected to respect and obey the laws of the land”.
It recalled that Henry lost a defamation case in September and that his guilty plea on his DUI charge is “another display that he has no respect for the position he holds and the citizens of this country.
“Driving under the influence is not something to be taken lightly; it endangers every single road user. In a country plagued with road fatalities, the Prime Minister should set an example with whom he chose to hold leadership positions,” the UNC said.
