APUA has offered clarity following an extended billing cycle that has resulted in higher-than-usual electricity bills for many customers.
Anazette Reynolds, the state utility firm’s Corporate Communications Officer, shed light on the situation and outlined measures being taken to assist affected consumers.
Reynolds explained that the extended billing cycle resulted from various operational challenges, including new recruits learning routes and other staffing issues.
“Our billing cycle is generally between 27 to 30 days,” Reynolds stated. “Due to these challenges, some customers’ last meter reading was in early July, with the next reading occurring later in August. This resulted in billing cycles of up to 42 days for some customers.”
The extended cycle has led to higher bills for August, as they include consumption that would typically be split between August and September. Reynolds reassured customers that September bills are likely to be lower as a result.
“A portion that would normally be shared between your August and September bill is mostly in August now,” she explained.
To assist customers in managing these larger bills, the company has extended its early payment discount offer.
“We’ve extended that discount. If the bill is paid up to one month after the due date, the 10 percent discount will still be applied or credited to the account,” Reynolds said. She emphasised that this is not an additional discount but an extension of the normal timely payment discount.
For customers struggling with the current billing cycle, Reynolds emphasised the company’s willingness to work out payment arrangements.
“Our credit control department normally handles payment arrangements on a day-to-day basis,” she said. Customers facing financial difficulties are encouraged to contact the credit control department at 480-7002 to formalise a payment plan that fits their circumstances.
Reynolds also addressed concerns about estimated readings, clarifying that not all bills were estimated. APUA aims to provide accurate readings where possible, with estimations used only when necessary, she said.
As the situation continues to evolve, customers are advised to review their bills carefully and take advantage of the extended discount period and payment arrangement options if needed. The utility company said it remains committed to resolving these billing issues and maintaining transparent communication with its customers.
