The Old Road FC fought off a late rally by Fort Road to win the final and deciding match in the First/Premier Division playoffs by a 2-1 margin on Tuesday, remaining in the top flight for another season.
Playing the feature match of a double-header at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG), Old Road, former Premier Division champions, scored on either sides of the half with both strikes coming from Jabarry Chandlar in minutes 38 and 66.
But an 87th minute conversion provided Fort Road with motivation as Shakimba Williams pushed home from close range. Try as they may, however, Fort Road could not find the all-important second goal to send the match into overtime.
The results mean that Old Road, who entered the match needing a victory to hold onto their spot in the top flight, will play in the Premier Division for the 2018/19 domestic season while Fort Road will remain in the First Division.
Meanwhile, John Hughes retained their status in the First Division following a 2-0 triumph over WestHam in a deciding match of the Second/First Division playoff.
Ajarni Thomas netted in minutes 25 and 75 to maintain John Hughes’ perfect run in the playoff and keep the team in the middle tier for another season.
Both Old Road and John Hughes collected a maximum six points in the playoffs.
