“No Boast, no problem” were the words spoken by captain of the H.U.F. Baldwin Braves, Lennox “Termite” McCoy as he responded to the news of the exit of key player, Vivian “Boast” Destin some weeks ago, but with their latest 86-78 loss to LJ Northside Stingerz, Destin’s new team, those words seem to have fallen through.
The ‘grudge-match’ lived up to the hype as the JSC Sports Complex was sent into a frenzy with a number of huge plays in the first half in which Braves dominated.
National player, Xavier “Xman” Meade was a man on a mission on both the offensive and defensive ends with a game high 25 points and 9 rebounds, but it would still not be enough to secure the victory.
“This is my house” were the words barked by Destin to the Braves fans as Stingerz rallied in the second half with a greater defensive and offensive presence to snatch the victory away from the defending champions.
Destin would end the encounter with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while teammates, Keroi “Dragon” Lee and Corey Evans assisted netting 23 and 13 points respectively.
Both players grabbed 12 rebounds.
Emotions flared as McCoy, who was visibly upset in the dying seconds of the encounter, was ejected after kicking the ball into the rafters.
He ended the match with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
It was then that ‘the hive’ began to chant and buzz in excitement as they knew they had wrapped up the win.
Stingerz now lead the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association Division One competition with a 4-0 record while Braves now hold a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.
In the other match-up on ‘Super-Sunday,’ former champions, F and G Trading Cuties Ovals Ojays ran a clinic on Ottos Full Throttle defeating them, 86-78.
National player, Devorn Benjamin led the Ojays with 16 points and 4 steals with assistance from veteran player, Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew who sank 12 and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Mahijah Davis made his debut for the men in red as he ended the match-up with a 12-point, 12 rebounds, 5 assists performance.
Ottos’ Isaac Bragg scored 11.
Captain Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew gave his views on The Good Morning JoJo Show on the addition of Davis and where he sees the team going this season.
“I expect the team to continue to progress, it’s a more balanced team now in terms of experience and youthfulness. It’s a process.
“Mahijah is a great addition to the team as he brings different aspects of the game in terms of rebounding and shooting. He gives a bit of comfort in taking some of the load off of some players.”
