The Supervisor of Elections is advising community organisations, including civil society organisations, commercial bodies, farmers organisations, commercial bodies, media bodies, political parties, religious organisations and trade unions, that the deadline for the submission of the names of persons for the role of Referendum Monitors is Monday, October 22, 2018.
A release from the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) states that according to the Constitutional Referendum Regulations Statutory Instrument, Clause 5: (1) A community organisation shall, not later than 14 days prior to the Referendum, submit in writing to the Supervisor of Elections; (a) The name of three referendum monitors for each polling station in the Constituency for appointment as referendum monitors; (b) The name of one referendum monitor for the appointment as the Chief Referendum Monitor to oversee the operation of the conduct of the referendum in the constituency.
(2) Where no names of Referendum monitors have been submitted by a community organisation of a constituency at the end of the date for submission of names, the Supervisor shall consult with the Christian Council and the Labour Unions to assist in the selection of monitors for the Referendum
The Referendum Monitors will be responsible for observing the conduct of the Referendum in each constituency.
Antiguans and Barbudans are scheduled to participate on a referendum on November 6, to determine whether the twin island state keeps the London-based Privy Council as its final Court of Appeal instead of joining the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as its apex court.
