With an increasing number of people of all ages in Antigua and Barbuda being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, a group has just been formed to support their caregivers.

The goal is to provide information, encouragement, and guides to resources for the caregivers, family members, and loved ones of those living with the disease.

Some 28 people joined the first session at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 10, via Zoom.

Nurse Trudy-Ann Dover discussed the progression of the disease and offered tips for coping with the most common symptoms. Participants were able to ask questions and share their experiences.

After the meeting one participant described the experience as “reassuring.”  She said, “There was something good about knowing that me and my family are not alone and that what seemed like bizarre experiences are normal or at least to be expected based on what I’ve heard from others.”

According to organizers, the plan is to meet once a month, via Zoom. Subgroups may wish to get together in person for various reasons and that is an option that can be explored.

On August 14, the presenter will be neurologist Dr. Gaden Osborne, who will talk about the changes in the brain that accompany the disease.

Almost everyone knows of someone who has been affected by this disease. Gaining knowledge and knowing where to find assistance is key. With that in mind the group welcomes everyone, including Antiguans and Barbudans living overseas.

Anyone wishing to formally join the group or anyone who simply wants to attend the next session can send their WhatsApp information via WhatsApp to Susan Lowes at 1-268-721-9550 or Jacqueline James at 1-268-464-9088.
