New site for Holy Trinity Primary School in Barbuda

A new location has been identified for the construction of a new Holy Trinity Primary School in Codrington, Barbuda.
The building which housed the old primary school was destroyed by hurricane Irma last September.
The Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst said the new location is approximately 15 feet above sea level, close to the Sir McChesney George Secondary School.
Two engineers from the Dominican Republic who recently visited Barbuda, determined that the new school ought not to be constructed so close to the lagoon, since it posed a flood threat if a hurricane should occur.
 “It is not likely to experience flooding in the event of a hurricane,” Hurst said.
Meanwhile, Hurst said, the start of construction would depend on a number of factors, including having the materials shipped from the Dominican Republic.
Once this is done, it is anticipated that the construction phase would
last approximately four months.
The Dominican Republic has already spent US $1.5 million on drawings, soil testing, purchasing of building supplies, and readying the materials for shipment to Barbuda.
Government has been engaging the Barbuda Council, and a town hall meeting has been held with the residents.
The school building is also intended to be used as a hurricane shelter and can cater to as many as 600 people.
