The well-attended farmers market which got underway in Jennings for the first time yesterday is expected to become a staple event.

Farmers were privileged to display and sell their produce at the Jennings Playing Field – market-style.

Agriculture Minister Samantha Marshall visited the venue and told Observer that she was pleased with the undertaking.

“It is intended to be a staple event in this district. I know there are other extension officers who are looking at ensuring that they have a similar thing.

“I saw farmers who came here to support their colleagues. We take it for granted, but this is something that is necessary,” Marshall said.

The agriculture minister said she is also delighted that the community turned out in large numbers to support the farmers.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to see persons coming from the community to support their own. You have the opportunity of bringing the market to the people as opposed to having the people come to the market,” she added.

The event was a brainchild of the farmers themselves, whose sales were reduced because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many of these farmers provided fruit and vegetables to the surrounding hotels, but were left with excess produce after Covid forced the closure of many resorts.

“These farmers were left with the reality that the hotels are still not opened at the maximum numbers. So, farmers had to find a way to market and sell their produce,” Marshall remarked.

Marshall said that she was pleased with the success of the entire undertaking and she looks forward to the next planned event.
