The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has announced that the new international airport in Barbuda, set to open on October 3, 2024, will be named the Burton-Nibbs International Airport.
This decision comes after extensive consultations with Barbuda residents and careful consideration of the contributions of several distinguished individuals to the island’s development.
The airport’s name honours two significant figures in Barbuda’s history:
- Sir Eric Burton
- Hon. Arthur Nibbs
Both Burton and Nibbs served as Members of Parliament representing Barbuda and were instrumental in shaping the twin-island state’s constitution during the Lancaster House conference in 1980.
They are recognized for their roles as pioneering entrepreneurs and leaders who significantly advanced commerce and economic development on the island.
The Cabinet’s decision followed robust discussions that examined the contributions of several notable “Barbudans,” including:
- Claude Earl Francis
- Hilborne Frank
- Sir McChesney George
- Trevor Walker
