National training squad named for Leeward Islands Championships

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Two overseas-based players have been included in a 31-member senior national training squad announced by the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) as they jump-start preparations for the August 7-17 Leeward Islands Championships.

Defender Akeem “Leppy” Thomas, who is based in Trinidad, with AIA Caledonia FC and midfielder Quinton Griffith of Charleston Battery FC in the United Soccer League (USL) in the USA have been included in the large training squad.

Thomas, who is currently on island, is expected to train with the squad until the August tournament, while Griffith, whose Charleston Battery team is currently 10th on the 14-team standings, is expected to join the team later this month.

The other members of the training squad are goalkeepers Molvin James, Azaria Francis, Brent Parker and Prince Walters alongside defenders Karanja Mack, Ranjae Christian, Hazely Pyle, Jamoy “Bling” Stevens, Sean Anthony and Mervyn Hazelwood-Gonsalves.

Also included are midfielders Alex Phillip, Tamarley “Ziggy” Thomas, Randolph “Etty” Burton, Odell Murray, Okeem “Soda” Challenger, Steven Roberts, Akeem “Baller” Thomas, Tiran Williams, Kimoy Alexander, Gason “Bubbler” Gregory, Romario Brathwaite, Eugene Kirwan and Lawson “Boy Blue” Robinson.

Rounding off the selections are strikers Trevaughn “Peter Reds” Hariette, Peter “Big Pete” Byers, Elvis “Chung” Thomas, Alren Lewis, Jamie “Taliban” Thomas and Stephan Smith.

The squad will be coached by Rolston “Debu” Williams who will be assisted by Schyan Jeffers. Training sessions set to commence on July 7 at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) at 6 pm.
