The National Student Council (NSC) of Antigua and Barbuda achieved a historic milestone with the successful hosting of its inaugural General Council meeting on January 14 at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre.
The event brought together over 160 students from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the nation, marking a pivotal step in the establishment of the NSC as the unified representative body for all students in Antigua and Barbuda, a press release said.
“The General Council convened to discuss critical matters, including the adoption of the NSC Constitution, preparations for upcoming elections to establish the Executive Council, and charting the organization’s path forward,” it added.
“With representation, advocacy, and mobilization as its guiding pillars, the NSC aims to amplify the voices of students and address their needs at both local and national levels.”
Joel Christian, Chair of the Steering Committee, presided over the meeting and emphasized the importance of unity and purpose in this foundational phase. A special communication from the President of the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda was read during the proceedings, encouraging members to be bold and fearless in their representation of the student body. Praise was also given to UNICEF for its support to the movement.
The General Council will reconvene soon to execute nominations for the Executive Council elections, which will set the stage for the upcoming High Council meeting, a critical step in formalizing the leadership structure of the NSC.
This inaugural meeting represents the dawn of a new era for student engagement in Antigua and Barbuda, with the NSC poised to become a dynamic platform for student-driven change and development.
