West Indies leg-spinner, Hayden Walsh Jr, said he was not anticipating the level of success he had against the visiting Australians during the regional squad’s recent convincing 4-1 T20 International series victory over the visitors in St Lucia.

Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show on Monday, Walsh said that although he has been working on his variation, his aim was simply to try and find his groove after being out for some time.

“I’ve been working for a long time, so just being able to consistently land some balls and spinning the ball a little bit more and I just feel really good. I actually didn’t anticipate this [performing so well] because I was just trying to get back in slowly but surely, taking baby steps, but I guess that wasn’t to be,” he said

Walsh was adjudged Man of the Series after picking up a total of 12 wickets which was one short of the T20I series record held by New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi, who also achieved the feat against Australia earlier this year.

He credits consistency and determination for his success.

“I think the pace that I bowled at and the consistency and also, the other guys were bowling well at the other end and they just had to come at me and knowing that they were coming at me and not giving them what they want, it just made me flourish,” Walsh said.

The Antiguan said he will now turn his focus to upcoming tournaments to include the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the upcoming Pakistan starting later this month in Barbados.

“Especially for Pakistan, it’s just to look at the batsmen and see what their stats are, see what their weaknesses are and just prepare for the conditions that I am going to be bowling in. Once I get that feedback and get that information I’ll work on all of that stuff going into that series,” he said.

The recent series was Walsh’s first International outing since late November when he featured against New Zealand in a match that was abandoned after two overs.
