A jury is hearing evidence as the murder trial of Berle “Junior” Wallace Jr got underway in the High Court of Justice on Wednesday.

Wallace Jr is charged with murder in relation to the March 2022 stabbing death of 36-year-old personal trainer Christopher Smithers.

One of the witnesses, Roderick Richards, described the fatal altercation between Wallace and Smithers outside Pita Pocket Restaurant on Popeshead Street. Richards testified that Smithers threw the first punch before Wallace allegedly got hold of a knife and stabbed him.

Both men had reportedly been looking at Smithers’ phone before the altercation occurred.

Additional testimony came from Paradise Hot Slot employee Phylicia Roberts, who said she witnessed the men having a conversation shortly before the incident.

Roberts said she was on her way to her vehicle when she heard someone — whom she described as a Caucasian man — making a noise.

The trial, which is being led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, is expected to lastfor approximately two weeks, and more than 25 witnesses  are expected to testify.

Wallace is represented by Attorney Wendel Alexander.

There was no evidence presented in the matter yesterday, however the trial will resume today before Justice Ann-Marie Smith.
