The government has come under fire for its delayed response to the hazardous conditions at the abandoned Bolans Fire Station, and only took action after the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Kelvin Simon publicly exposed their inaction.
According to MP Simon, who is the stagnant water accumulated at the site for months, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes and posing a serious health risk to both residents and officers stationed at the nearby Bolans Police Station.
The MP said that despite repeated complaints from the community, no efforts were made to resolve the issue.
However, in a sudden turn of events, just one day after MP Simon’s public criticism on March 10, a government clean-up crew was dispatched to pump out the water—a move that has been widely seen as damage control rather than genuine leadership.
The St Mary’s South MP also highlighted that residents of the constituency remain frustrated, pointing to the government’s long-standing failure to complete the Bolans Fire Station, a project that has remained stalled for eight years. With no functioning fire station in the area, emergency response times have suffered, leaving homes and businesses vulnerable.
“The government has resources. They recently boasted about acquiring new fire trucks, yet we have no fire station to properly house them,” MP Simon stated. “The lack of a fully equipped fire tender in Johnson’s Point continues to put lives at risk.”

The urgency of the issue was underscored by a recent house fire in Urlings, which highlighted the dire need for an effective and timely emergency response system.
“The failure to complete the Bolans Fire Station is not an oversight—it’s a choice,” MP Simon emphasized. “A choice to neglect the people of St Mary’s South, to prioritize PR over real solutions, and to put lives in jeopardy.”
MP Simon is demanding immediate action, calling on the government to fulfill its responsibilities and complete the fire station without further delays.
