The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a moderate air quality alert effective until Tuesday.

As of 11:45 PM Sunday, August 18, 2024, the air quality index (AQI) ranges from 51 to 75, placing it in the “moderate” category.

This decline in air quality is attributed to the seventeenth surge of Saharan dust affecting the country this year.

The presence of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) has elevated the potential health risks, particularly for sensitive groups.

While the overall health risk remains low, authorities advise caution, especially for individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly, and children.

Active adults and those with respiratory diseases like asthma are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activities.

The Meteorological Service has set the alert level at II, indicating that air quality is generally acceptable but may pose moderate health concerns for some sensitive individuals.

Residents are urged to stay informed about air quality updates through the Meteorological Service’s official channels, including their website (antiguamet.com) and social media platforms.
