Antigua and Barbuda’s Jolie George-Alexander came away from the recently held Sagicor COTECC Junior Under-14 International Tennis tournament in St Lucia as doubles champion.

George-Alexander joined forces with Trinidad & Tobago’s Shiloh Walker to win the girls’ doubles championship over the T&T pair of Makeda Bain and Madison Khan by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

Held at the National Tennis Centre, Gros Islet, St Lucia over August 5-10, George-Alexander had also advanced to the main draw semi-finals in the singles, but lost to T&T’s E Campbell-Smith, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.

Meanwhile in boys’ Under-14, Antigua and Barbuda’s Giovanni Quinn advanced to the singles main draw but lost in the round of 16 to Nathan DeNobrega of Guyana, 3-6, 1-6 in a rain-interrupted match.

Quinn, however, had better results in the doubles where he advanced to the final after teaming up with DeNobrega against the Central American pair of Mateo Harrarte of El Salvador and Mateo Gutierez of Guatemala.

Quinn’s team lost 5-7 in a tight first set tie-breaker but could not complete the match after they were forced to forfeit on account of his partner, DeNobrega, having to leave to catch a flight home.

President Cordell Williams, in whose tennis camp both players train, said that he was disappointed with Quinn’s results in the singles but pleased with his double’s result. He was elated with George-Alexander’s performance and congratulated her on her doubles victory.
