In the publication’s May 13 cover story, the 24-year-old singer, songwriter, and actress revealed the title of the first cut from her upcoming sixth studio album (set to drop later this year), further explaining that it was partially inspired by her rekindled relationship with fiancé Liam Hemsworth.
“I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song,” she told the publication. “[People are] going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”
The magazine goes on to describe the tune as “breezy” and “gimmick-free pop-rock.” Its parent album — written by Cyrus and produced with the help of Oren Yoel, who plays all the instruments — also reportedly contains a song written about 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and an anthem for women in the workplace.
“My main concern isn’t radio,” Cyrus admitted to Billboard of the single’s debut, noting that she hopes her music (and the aesthetic of a refreshed public image) will speak to people outside the liberal bubble following the surprise release of her 2015 experimental psych-rock LP Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. “I like talking to people that don’t agree with me, but I don’t think I can do that in an aggressive way… I don’t think those people are going to listen to me when I’m sitting there in nipple pasties, you know?”
She continued: “This record is a reflection of the fact that yes, I don’t give a f—, but right now is not a time to not give a f— about people. I’m giving the world a hug and saying, ‘Hey, look. We’re good — I love you.’ And I hope you can say you love me back.”
