Shastri Lopez has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for breaking into and stealing from Dr. Alvin Edwards’ home last September.
The convicted man pleaded guilty before All Saints Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel when the prosecution called the case for trial this week.
Lopez admitted that on September 3, he forced his way into the Mercer’s Creek property and stole an ophthalmology text book, a knapsack, a gold neck chain, a gold hand chain, a bluetooth speaker and other items, which valued over $4,600.
When sentencing Lopez for the offence, Magistrate Emanuel said that the seven months he spent on remand awaiting trial, are to be counted as part of the sentence.
Thirty-two-year-old Lopez was jointly accused with his long-time friend, Kimmoy Tonge, but after Tonge pleaded not guilty, the prosecution withdrew the charge against him.
According to the police prosecution, Lopez, who lives in Willikies, has prior convictions for larceny.
The maximum sentence Lopez could have gotten for this latest crime was two years in jail.
