A resident of Villa will be spending the next six months behind bars after he admitted to stealing a water pump valued at $2,500 from a supermarket.

On May 1, Eric Burton drove his car to the back of the Epicurean Supermarket on Friars Hill Road where their pump station is situated.

He opened his trunk and pulled out a cutlass which he then used to cut the pipes attached to the pump.

Burton placed the pump in the back of his car and drove away.

It wasn’t until a few days later that the supermarket’s maintenance manager noticed that the pump was missing.

The matter was reported to the police who reviewed the surveillance footage and spotted the defendant executing the theft.

He was subsequently taken into custody.

Yesterday, in the St John’s Magistrates’ Court, Burton told Magistrate Conliffe Clarke that he was indeed guilty.

“I thought it was abandoned; I thought it wasn’t in use,” he told the magistrate. “But I was wrong. I am sorry Sir; I can’t be wrong and strong.”

Despite appearing to be remorseful, having reviewed the defendants’ antecedents, the magistrate sentenced him to months jail time.

Meanwhile, Tevin Willock will have to wait until July 14 to find out if his larceny case will be sent up to the High Court.

Willock is accused of stealing over $58,000 worth of items, which made his matter indictable.

Magistrate Clarke was able to grant him bail in the sum of $75,000 with a $5,000 cash component.

The other conditions were that his travel documents had to be seized, he had to report to the police station four days a week, he had to provide two Antiguan sureties and he has to remain a resident of his current home in Greenbay.
