Abusive stepfather Karim Christian was ordered to pay a fine of $350 for severely beating his 16-year-old stepson with a piece of wood last year.

The man, who was charged with battery after the February 2019 incident, was given 24 hours to pay the fine or spend seven days behind bars.

The abuse sparked public outrage after the video circulated of him beating the teenager with a long piece of wood and ordering him to keep his hands around a tree after reportedly being asked by his wife to discipline the boy.

In a court hearing in March 2019, a medical report submitted by the prosecution to Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel Edwards in All Saints Magistrate’s Court, outlined the extent of the violence meted out to the child.

Shortly after the incident, the Family and Social Services Division began offering counselling and other services to the family, and relatives told Observer that the 16-year-old moved in with his biological father.

Christian is also said to have apologised to the boy’s father for the incident.
