A deportation order has been issued for 28-year-old Jamaican national Ricardo McKenzie, who was convicted last month for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On Tuesday, Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel authorised the order for McKenzie’s removal from the country, after he has served a prison sentence of one year and eight months.

McKenzie was charged with the offence following an incident on August 19 when police, acting on information received, intercepted a silver Toyota Belta at Green Castle, Bendals.

McKenzie and another Jamaican national, O’Neil Swaby, were in the vehicle.

During a search, officers found a 9mm automatic pistol with seven rounds of ammunition in the chamber on the back seat, as well as a ski mask in McKenzie’s possession.

The firearm, described as a “ghost gun” due to its lack of a serial number, was clearly visible.

Both men appeared in court about two weeks ago, where McKenzie admitted full responsibility for the offences.

Consequently, charges against Swaby were dropped, but he was deported to Jamaica the next day.

Magistrate Emanuel, considering the visible firearm and the ski mask, concluded that the men appeared to have been planning to commit a criminal act.

McKenzie was sentenced to concurrent terms of one year and eight months for the firearm charge and nine months for ammunition possession.
