A 60-year-old man was taken to hospital yesterday after apparently being shot in his home.

Police are probing the incident which took place on lower Newgate Street shortly after noon on Thursday.

A male intruder is said to have entered the elderly man’s property, before assaulting and shooting him. The victim, a food vendor, is said to be in stable condition in hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower body.

Witnesses near the scene told Observer they heard something that “sounded strange”.

“I heard him screaming, looked up and saw the guy walk out the house, close the door behind him and head east,” one man said.

He explained that he gave chase to the assailant, who is believed to have fled by bicycle, but lost him. Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activities in the area to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913/4.
