A 28-year-old resident of Sutherlands has been remanded to prison after pleading guilty to charges of possessing an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The charges stem from an incident on Monday, August 19, when police intercepted a vehicle at Green Castle, Bendals.
Riccardo McKenzie, appeared in the All-Saints Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday alongside his co-accused, 34-year-old O’Neil Swaby from Jamaica.
McKenzie took full responsibility for the offenses, leading to the withdrawal of charges against Swaby.
The police, acting on received information, had stopped a silver Toyota Belta motor car in which both men were traveling.
During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a 9mm automatic pistol and seven rounds of matching ammunition.
The firearm was reportedly found in plain sight on top of the back seat. Additionally, a ski mask was found in a bag on McKenzie’s person.
Following his guilty plea, McKenzie was remanded to custody to await sentencing, which is scheduled for Friday, August 23.
Meanwhile, a deportation order was granted on Thursday morning for Swaby, who is set to return to Jamaica today.
