“Golf should be a CARIFTA event”, was the pronouncement of national golfer and coach Marlon George.

George while speaking on the Good Morning JoJo Sports show earlier this week — following his historic victory in the first ever National championships — was adamant that the junior golfers need a platform to showcase their talent.

“I think we have talent throughout the Caribbean and I think our young junior golfers need a platform as big as that to showcase their talent. I think playing CARIFTA golf would be a good platform where our young boys and girls could be noted,” George said.

He posited that it would be a major factor in bridging that gap to showcase the youth to college and university coaches not only in the US, but around the world.

“To get in contact with college coaches is really hard, especially for our junior golfers here. We are not having college coaches coming down to the Caribbean to look for our kids, so we have to reach out to these coaches. To get one of our golfers into college, we had to send out at least two or three hundred different videos to college programmes; some answered back and some didn’t even have the time of day for us and that’s the same thing with our other golfers as well. If we can have a platform where coaches can come from the States, whether high school or college, to look at our junior golfers, that would be really good,” he noted.

In past years, CARIFTA featured sports like basketball but over time those sports had to be cut due to lack of funding and other matters. Since then, CARIFTA has featured the track and field championships and swimming as well.

This year’s edition of the regional event is slated to take place in Bermuda in August.
