A large team of boxers left Antigua & Barbuda for St Lucia on Wednesday where they will compete in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Boxing Tournament slated to start on Friday.
Franklin Spencer, the youngest of the lot, at 14 years old, will compete in the juniors’ 15-16 age category while Jeremiah Toussaint and Justin Soriannofranco will also compete in that age group.
Uriah Desilver and Kibwana James will box in the youth 17-18 age category, while Lance Robinson and Senthikumar Muralimohan will try their hand in the novices’ 19 and over group.
One member of the coaching team, Anthony Severin, is hoping that, first of all, the boxers take full advantage of the experience that comes with competing on unfamiliar turf.
“Mostly the experience; they are going to earn experience from being out there competing against other countries within the region so that is one of the positives they are going to take away, just going out there and competing against each other,” he said.
Once placed in their desired division, however, Severin is confident the local boxers can excel at the tournament.
“Hopefully, they put them in the right division they are supposed to be [in] because most of the youngsters we have right now are novices, youths and juniors. They just started, so this would be the first fight for most of them. Hopefully, with the training we’ve been doing for the past couple of years with the new location, hopefully, we can come out on top,” he said.
The team will be managed by Khalid Shabazz while Archibald Richards will travel as team doctor.
