Local agricultural officers receive training in advanced pepper production through Chinese partnership

A training course on Hybrid Pepper Breeding, Seed Production and cultivation techniques has been launched in Antigua and Barbuda as a significant initiative aimed at boosting the nation’s agricultural capacity, particularly in the area of pepper production.

The month-long course is hosted by Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Co. Ltd., a leading Chinese agricultural company known for its expertise in crop breeding and hybrid seed technology, in collaboration with the Agricultural Extension Division.

The event marks an important step in Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to modernize its agriculture industry and improve food security.

The workshop is held at the Villa Polytechnical Clinic and scheduled from October 15 to November 13, 2024. The focus will be on equipping local agricultural personnel with cutting-edge techniques for breeding and cultivating Hybrid Peppers.

This program also strengthens agricultural cooperation between Antigua/Barbuda and China.

The techniques will be disseminated to and the training of 60 participants from various sections of the nation’s agricultural ministry to include field workers and technical staff.

The attendees will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills. By the end of the program, participants are expected to have a thorough understanding in areas such as:

  • Hybrid pepper breeding and seed production techniques
  • Pepper seedling cultivation
  • High-yield pepper cultivation methods
  • Greenhouse pepper farming
  • Pest and disease management for pepper crops
  • Pepper harvesting, storage and processing
  • Insights into China’s pepper production and agricultural advancements.

To ensure that participants gain practical experience, the course includes both classroom and hands-on field training. Participants will engage in on-site visits to pepper production facilities, where they will observe cultivation techniques firsthand.

Mr. Olowabi Elabango, the Chief Extension Officer in the Agricultural Extension Division-Ministry of Agriculture, has seen this training a necessity for the advancement of pepper production, and he is the organizer/overseer for this timely venture.

It is anticipated that those trained will in the near future train others in an effort in helping them to improve their yields.

The course is led by a team of 10 highly experienced Chinese Agricultural experts, each specializing in different aspects of vegetable research and cultivation.

Among them are:

  • Mr. Huang Yanwu, an expert in vegetable cultivation technologies
  • Dr. Miao Wu, a pepper breeding specialist
  • Mr. Yang Feng, a veteran in pest disease and control
  • Mr. Weng Yong, with over 20 years of experience in agricultural technology cooperation
  • Mr. Sun Jiajie, a researcher focused on pepper genetics and breeding

This training workshop represents an opportunity for Antigua and Barbuda to improve its agricultural productivity and adopt innovative techniques in pepper farming.

By learning from China’s extensive experience in hybrid crop production, local agricultural professionals are expected to contribute to the country’s long-term food security and economic sustainability.

Furthermore, this collaboration reinforces the growing relationship between the twin island state and China, paving the way for other future partnerships in the industry, agricultural science and technology.
