Police are investigating an incident which occurred in Liberta on Thursday night in the vicinity of the area, known as ‘Yasaso’ corner.
Reports are that what sounded like multiple explosions were heard before three men were impacted by strange particles which fell on them.
One of the men, who did not wish to be identified, told Observer the sounds were, however, not as loud as gunshots. He said he initially thought the sound came from a bottle of Guinness which he had opened at that same time.
He said that the particles struck his arm, while one of the other two men felt something on his head. The third man felt the impact on the shoulder.
What the man said he found strange is that although something struck him and the others, the objects were not identifiable.
“Three persons were here and I opened the pint of Guinness and I thought, when I heard the explosion, I thought it was a Guinness that exploded because I didn’t quite watch what I was doing. But then it wasn’t the Guinness.
“I asked the two guys what happened and they said they don’t know. But something fell on me and one of the other guys. In fact, the other two guys felt something on them too, but there was nothing visible,” the man said.
The Liberta resident, who said he feels intimidated by the incident, notes that he is unsure what actually took place, where the sounds came from and what struck him and others.
A report of the incident was made to the Liberta Police Station and officers who visited the scene did not find any obvious evidence which would suggest that the explosion was as a result of gunshots. There was no indentation in the neighbouring building or spent shells found, the man said.
“And we looked at the door that was at our back (which was closed) to investigate if anything had struck the door. And one of the guys thought it might have been somebody throwing some ice or something at us.
“But then if it was ice, within that short space of time, all that ice could not have disintegrated or melted.
“We did see some spots like wet droplets on the door, four or five of them. That was our immediate observation. But nothing, we didn’t see any indentation; we didn’t see any particles, such as anything foreign. We checked the ground and stuff like that and we didn’t see anything. But it was enough to be of concern,” the Liberta man told Observer.
He said is hoping that he was not the intended target while adding that he hopes the police would return to conduct a closer forensic investigation of the scene.
Meanwhile, one of the other men, attorney-at-law Wayne Benjamin Marsh, who is a political hopeful for the area, is of the opinion that he was the intended target.
Marsh had stopped at the location to pick up something for his nephew when he became involved in a discussion with the other two men about technology, the use of air conditioning and how you can get the best results as the other man is an expert in air conditioning units.
In defending his belief of being the target, the attorney said he was the only person who was standing and he felt an object pass by his head. He said if the other two men, who were sitting, were the intended targets the item would have passed lower.
While no one was seen on foot in the area at the time, there were vehicles passing at the time the event occurred.
The incident reportedly occurred sometime after 7:30 pm.
