Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, LIAT 2020 completed its first passenger flight on Tuesday, breathing new life into Caribbean aviation.

The Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft, carrying a mix of officials and one paying passenger, embarked on a 50-minute journey from Antigua to St Lucia.

This flight, though brief, represented years of efforts to revive the essential inter-island service.

Ceremonies at both VC Bird International Airport in Antigua and George FL Charles Airport in St Lucia bookended the historic flight.

The events underscored LIAT’s renewed commitment to excellence and safety in its operations.

Ambassador Daven Joseph, LIAT’s former Interim Chairman, emphasised the critical role of customer service in the airline’s future success.

“What we have to do in this sky that is all of a sudden becoming a little crowded, is to depend on yourselves and provide service,” he said. “You have to beat all of your competitors with service, service, service. From ticketing, from air travelling, just every aspect of your operation, please just concentrate on service.”

LIAT 2020’s CEO, Hafsah Abdulsalam, expressed optimism about the airline’s future, saying, “As we look ahead, this flight is only the beginning. Our commitment to innovation and growth will continue to propel us to new heights. We’re excited about the future and the endless possibilities it holds.”

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, a key figure in LIAT’s revival, described the airline’s return as a testament to perseverance.

He remarked, “I believe that this is a great story of courage, of patience, and of resilience. And perhaps the message to all of us is that, notwithstanding the challenges, we should always press on with determination, with optimism, knowing that invariably there’s a brighter future for those who have the courage and resilience to fight whatever obstacles are placed in their way.”

This rebirth follows the official cessation of operations by LIAT 1974 in January. The new iteration, born from a partnership with Nigerian carrier Air Peace and supported by regional governments, aims to restore vital air links within the Caribbean.

LIAT 2020 plans to operate seven aircraft, initially flying three days a week between Antigua, Barbados, and St Lucia.

As this Caribbean phoenix spreads its wings once more, it carries with it the hopes of improved regional connectivity and economic growth.
