Clare Hall Secondary School student Sierra Letlow will represent Antigua and Barbuda in the Optimist Caribbean District Oratorical Finals in Kingston, Jamaica, today.

Letlow will compete against other 11 other winners from across the region in the finals which will be held at TV J Studio.

The 15-year-old emerged winner from a field of eight contestants in the local competition put on by the Optimist Club of St. John’s.

The topic for both the local and regional competitions is, “Is there a thin line between Optimism and Reality”.

The competition, now in its 27th year in Antigua, challenges young people to express their views on a pre-assigned topic issued by the parent organization, Optimist International.

“The preparation since winning the local competition has been intense, but I am ready for the next level.  I plan to do my best to make Antigua & Barbuda proud,“ Letlow said.

Should she win at the regional level, she will represent the Caribbean against other regional winners in the World Championships to be held in the summer. The overall winner will receive over EC $60,000 in scholarships towards their tertiary education.

Dr. Diandra Payne, a member of the Optimist Club of St. John’s, is accompanying Letlow to Jamaica.
