Head coach of the Antigua and Barbuda Benna Boys and former national footballer, Mikele Leigertwood, said he would welcome the opportunity to work in Antigua on a full-time basis.
The revelation follows back-to-back losses in the Concacaf Nations League within four days, as they contested Group D in League B of the tournament here at the ABFA’s Technical Centre.
“There is a strong possibility, and I’ve said that from the start from when we started speaking, it’s a job that I hold very dear to my heart and I think that by being here and us training and working on a more consistent basis, I think we can get a lot more out of the team,” he said.
Leigertwood is currently employed on a part-time basis with that contract reportedly set to expire at the end of the year. Last week, the England-based coach said he was yet to ink a new deal with the FA.
Once here on the ground on a more permanent basis, Leigertwood said he would be willing to work along with the schools’ football programme as part of a holistic redevelopment of football in Antigua and Barbuda.
“If I can help make an impact anywhere, then I am certainly open and we discussed it the other day in terms of what football would look like in a certain country or a certain island, and if we could have these sorts of things in place, an Antiguan DNA if you like, then it would help support the national teams and the local teams in years to come,” the coach said.
The Benna Boys were beaten one-nil by Bermuda at the ABFA’s Technical Centre on Tuesday before going under 2-1 to Dominica on Saturday at the same venue. The Benna Boys are sitting at the bottom of Group D, without a point.
The Dominican Republic heads the group with six points from their two matches, while Bermuda and Dominica sit second and third with three points each. Bermuda however, boasts a better goal difference than Dominica.
