The Leeward Islands’ batting woes continued as they suffered another disappointing loss to Trinidad and Tobago in their first match of the Cricket West Indies Men’s Under 19 50 Overs Championship on Tuesday.
Trinidad and Tobago, batting first, were dismissed for a modest 108 runs. Andrew Rambaran stood out with a resilient 39 off 71 balls as the Leewards’ bowling attack impressed, with Is-rael Morton leading the charge with figures of 3 for 12. Opening fast bowler Michael Palmer also contributed two for eight runs.
However, the Leewards’ response with the bat was disastrous from the start. Openers Brent Joseph (1) and Devanind Singh (0) failed to break their poor run of form, leaving the team vulnerable once again. Fareez Ali exploited this weakness, dismantling the top order with figures of three for 10, reducing the Leewards to a paltry score of 15 for 4 in the 10th over.
Jewel Andrew and Nathan Edward temporarily steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket. But his aggressive intent backfired when he was caught for 33 while attempting to hit Aneal Rooplal out of the park, leaving the score at 65 for 5.
This dismissal triggered a collapse, with the Leewards losing their last six wickets for just 12 runs in seven overs. Off-spinner Joshua Davis was the chief destroyer, claiming impressive figures of 5 for 24. The Leewards were ultimately bowled out for a mere 77 runs with 20 overs remaining, handing Trinidad and Tobago a comfortable victory. They will play Guyana in their next encounter on Wednesday.
