Close to 40 horses have already registered ahead of the December 30th return of horse racing at the Cassada Gardens Race Track.
This is according to President of the Antigua Turf Club (ATC), Neil Cochrane, who said the numbers could grow ahead of the Old Year’s Race Meet.
“We have at the moment, on the books, over 35 entries that are spread across six races and you are talking about all the big names that are already listed showing their interest in racing this coming 30th December. So it is really looking and unfolding to be perhaps the biggest race day, the most competitive race day of the year,” he said.
Cochrane, also a trainer, said fans have been eagerly anticipating the sport’s return after it suffered many delays owing to consistent showers between the months of September, October and parts of November.
“We did a little thing in October but that was not to the standard we wanted it to be and so we have only raced once between July and now. So, yes, the people are hungry for racing; they are clamoring for it. They are meeting you and asking when is the date and so the 30th of
December, horse racing at the Cassada Gardens Race Track, we’re back,” the turf boss said.
One of the marquee races slated for December 30, the Asot A. Michael sponsored Fresh Milk Breeders Cup, will feature all locally bred horses and, according to Cochrane, it has so far attracted the attention of owners of the top horses.
“There will be six local thoroughbreds going in terms of Ital who is unbeaten in four starts; you have The Don, who has also been unbeaten in his last two starts. Booby Alley, I think, is unbeaten in five starts so there are a lot of horses there that have not really been beaten recently and they are going to be clashing up,” he said.
The feature race will carry a purse of $7,500 with the winner set to take home $4,000. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m. with the first race set to start at 2 p.m.
