A significant development in Barbuda’s land rights and management was announced during the cabinet meeting.

The Land Adjudication Board, chaired by Sir Clare K Roberts, commenced its operations in Barbuda on August 28, 2024.

The board’s primary task is to conduct a comprehensive cadastral survey of Barbuda.

As part of this process, individuals who have historically used crown land will be invited to establish their claims over specific parcels.

This initiative aims to create a clear and accurate record of land use and ownership on the island.

A key aspect of this process is the change in land ownership structure in Barbuda.

While all land on the island is currently owned by the crown, new legislation allows for the sale of crown land in fee simple to those who have occupied and built homes on these lands.

In a gesture of goodwill, Barbudan residents will be able to purchase their occupied plots for the sum of $1.00.

The cabinet emphasized that this process will continue for as long as necessary within a reasonable timeframe to ensure a thorough and accurate mapping of the island.
