Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) caretaker for All Saints East and St Luke, Lamin Newton, was sworn in yesterday as the newest government senator.
Newton’s appointment fills the vacancy left by former senator Osbert Frederick, who was recently appointed Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament.
The latest development is among a flurry of changes made in the Senate by both political parties.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, who presided over the ceremony, praised Newton’s background as former Executive Chairman of the Central Marketing Corporation and his academic pursuits in political science.
“Your journey to this moment exemplifies what can be achieved through determination, service, steadfast commitment to community and patience.
“Your entry into the Senate is not just an opportunity for personal accomplishment; it is a call to action. It is a chance to influence policies, shape national discourse, and advocate for the needs of all citizens. We trust that you will carry out your duties with integrity, energy, and vision.,” Sir Rodney remarked.
Newton, speaking to state media, highlighted his key priorities for his senatorial role. “The constituency has been under-represented for the last three decades,” he claimed, focusing on critical areas including housing, infrastructure, and education.
The incoming senator paid emotional tribute to his late father, whom he credited as a significant political influence.
He also acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who appointed him to the Senate.
Minister of Foreign Affairs EP Chet Greene lauded Newton’s appointment as a demonstration of the country’s democratic process, claiming that being a senator is “a stepping stone” to future electoral politics.
“Last night, the Prime Minister and I had the opportunity of meeting in the All Saints East and St Luke constituency [for a townhall]. If there’s anything I can say from that event, we have someone who’s ready for service,” he said.
Newton was clear about his political ambitions, stating his intention to win the All Saints East and St Luke’s constituency in future elections.
He emphasized his team’s preparedness and commitment to bringing “proper and true representation” to the area.
