The first ever 3×3 female national Under-18 basketball team, the Lady Pitbulls, are confident of their chances in a successful run in the International Basketball Foundation (IBF) Antilles 3X3 Hoops Championships.
The four-man team that is comprised of Karel Knight, Kahtalia Valentine, Athalia Ralph and captain Laumeca Charles left for Guyana on Thursday to compete in Group B versus Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The ladies earned the national selection after winning the local 3×3 tournament put on by the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA).
“I feel confident about our chances in the tournament, we had practices and trained very hard for this and I really think that once we go out and do our best then we will be successful,” stated Charles who spoke exclusively with OBSERVER media.
Charles shut down concerns of them playing two teams they have never met before which include defending champions, Martinique.
“We all were a part of the fourth-place team that represented Antigua and Barbuda at the Under-16 female regional tournament in Guyana so we have some experience and although we never saw these two teams we are not intimidated and will just go out and play Antigua basketball.”
“We do expect a tough game from both teams but we are ready and hope to make everyone proud.”
The team that left on Thursday afternoon thanked their parents, their trainers Carl and Olena Knight, the ABBA Executive mainly Jennell Willette, Kebra Nanton and Gemma Hazelwood for their support thus far.
