In emphatic fashion, young Siyolo Joseph swung his way to victory in the third annual Michael Freeland and Patricia Matthew Junior Masters Golf Championship held at Cedar Valley Golf Course over the weekend, culminating on Sunday.

The 13-year-old St Joseph’s Academy (SJA) student shot a commanding total of one over par spanning the two days of competition to win the coveted Red Jacket and the championship plaque.

Following his opening round of two over par 72, the New Winthorpes resident shot a sizzling one under par 69 to finish seven shots clear of runner-up Marquise George.

For his tally of 148, George was awarded a trophy. Taj Barnes, who shot a 36-hole total of 161 finished third.

Joseph was elated to have won his first title.

“It feels good to see all my hard work have paid off and I finally win. I was putting better, chipping better and it feels good. I am coming back next year,” he said.

In the female flight, it was the dynamic Catherine Woodhouse who excelled.

Woodhouse shot 170, to take the championship plaque and the Red Jacket ahead of Thaisse Warner.

Twelve-year-old Ayo Dellis took the juniors A flight ahead of Jaleel Lewis and Lovando Weekes who finished second and third respectively.

Woodhouse exuded confidence following her triumph.

“I think today [Sunday] I really felt like I wanted it more, so I pushed through and I expected to win but the course right now is playing tough so I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” she said.

A total of 12 youngsters took part in the event, which was also sponsored by Rocky’s Duty Free Store at VC Bird International Airport and Eighteen Plus One Restaurant.
