John Hughes and Willikies win to command Second Division zones

John Hughes leaped to the top of Zone B in the Football Association’s Second Division on Monday following a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Golden Grove.

Playing at the John Hughes field, the home team had goals from Garcel Morrison in minute 5 and LeoCroft Burnside in minute 80 as they jump to 28 points, one ahead of second placed St. John’s United who also won on Monday.

Previous leaders, English Harbour, are now third in the standings with 26 points but with a game in hand.

Golden Grove had their lone strike against John Hughes in minute 46 from Nicholas Litters as they remain fourth with 22 points.

In their Zone B contest, St John’s United barely avoided a charge of battery but walked away with three points following their 2-0 triumph over Police.

The victory keeps them in the hunt for the single promotion spot up for grabs with their 27 points. Police are second from bottom with 11 points.

Meanwhile in Zone A, Willikies came out on top of a 4-3 thriller against home team Sea View Farm.   

A double from Phil Nicholas, netting in minutes 21 and 45, alongside single strikes from Fabrino Charles and D’Jarie Sheppard in minutes 32 and 47 respectively secured three points for Willikies as they move to 34 points at the top of the standings after 15 matches.

Sea view Farm, who had all three goals from Markland Wright, remain fifth in the standings with 22 points after 15 outings.

In the other Zone A match contested Monday, Jennings and JSC Progressors played to a 1-1 draw while in Zone B, 5P’s defeated hosts Young Warriors 3-0.
