All Saints United head coach Schyan Jeffers highlighted significant concerns about youth development and coaching methodology while discussing the challenges of running a professional club in the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association’s Premier League.
Addressing the current state of football development in Antigua, Jeffers expressed deep concern about fundamental issues at the grassroots level. “Our methodology of coaching and development is a bit poor.” He is calling for a collaborative approach among stakeholders: “All the coaches, executives, and people behind football who are trying to move it forward should come together and try to find the best way possible to make football a success.”
The experienced coach emphasized the need for a more structured approach to player development. “We need to establish a blueprint, a style of play, and understand the kind of DNA that our players possess,” Jeffers explained. “Whether it’s athletic ability or passing, we need to find the right balance and work around the type of players Antigua produces.”
Discussing club operations, Jeffers revealed the financial challenges facing local teams. His club, All Saints United, operates through a combination of community support and corporate sponsorships from local businesses, including Special Security and Bitar Pizza. “It’s very hard, very challenging,” he admitted. “Without certain funding, it’s not feasible to compete for championships because you need resources to attract the best players.”
When discussing his recruitment philosophy, Jeffers outlined his preference for versatile players. “I’m not a big fan of a player who can only play one position,” he explained. “My first choice is always to look for players with more than one skill set, allowing us to adapt our tactical approach when needed.”
Looking ahead to the regional competition, Jeffers acknowledged the financial challenges of participating in tournaments like the Caribbean Cup, noting that while some costs are covered by organizers, clubs must secure additional funding to offset other expenses. The club is hoping to retain its title as it prepares for the second phase of the ABFA Premier League.
